Icon of the Archangel Gabriel

O ye incorporeal angels who stand before the throne of God, luminous with the brilliance thereof and everlastingly shining with radiance. As secondary luminaries, entreat Christ, that He grant unto our souls peace and great mercy.

O immortal messengers of the truly incorruptible Life, ye most blessed ones who received life from the first Life, ye have become holy beholders of the eternal Wisdom, full of light, and reflecting lamps shown forth as is meet.

O ye archangels and angels, principalities, thrones, dominions, six-winged seraphim, and divine, many-eyed cherubim, instruments of wisdom, virtues and powers most divine. Pray ye to Christ, that He grant our souls peace and great mercy.

Prayer of Sts. Peter and Paul
Lord, your holy chief apostles, Peter and Paul, are to this day splendid examples for all of us. They were real people with good and bad points in their characters. However, once converted, they were always preaching and teaching the Lord Jesus Christ and traveling and leading others toward the kingdom. They were steadfast and faithful to the end of their lives. Holy apostles Peter and Paul, pray for us!
From the Church Fathers…by St. Ephrem
“The Virgin Mary (Theotokos) is a symbol of the church when she receives the first announcement of the gospel. And, it is in the name of the church that the Theotokos sees the Risen Jesus. Blessed be God who filled the Theotokos and the church with joy. We call the church by name of Mary, for she deserves a double name.”
Cosmas and Damian — Feast Day on July 1st
Cosmas and Damian are the principal and best known of those saints venerated in the East as “moneyless ones,” because they practiced medicine without taking reward from their patients. They were twin brothers, born in Arabia, who studied the sciences in Syria and became eminent for their skill in medicine. Being Christians, and full of charity, they practiced their profession but never took a fee for their services.
They lived at Aegeae on the bay of Alexandretta in Cilicia. When persecution began to rage, it was impossible for persons of so distinguished character to lie concealed. They were apprehended and after many torments were beheaded for the faith. Their bodies were carried to Syria and buried at Cyrrhus. Legends abound about these Holy Unmercenaries. Many miracles of healing were ascribed to them after their deaths—with the saints sometimes even appearing to sufferers in their sleep and prescribing for them or curing them then and there.
Among the distinguished people who attributed recovery from serious illness to Sts. Cosman and Damian was the Emperor Justinian I, who out of regard for their relics, honored the city of Cyrrhus. Two churches at Constantinople are said to have been built in honor of the martyrs in the early fifth century. Their basilica in Rome was dedicated about the year 530.
Feast of the Deposition of the Robe of the Mother of God — July 2nd
In the fifth century, during the reign of Emperor Leo the Great and Patriarch Genadius, two noblemen from Constantinople, Galibus and Candidus, traveled on a pilgrimage throughout the Holy Land. They desired to visit the holy sites, venerate the holy shrines, and walk in the footsteps of Jesus.
While in Nazareth, however, they stopped at the home of a Jewish woman who was said to have the robe and belt of the Mother of God hidden inside her house. The truth of this was confirmed when Galibus and Candidus witnessed the miraculous cure of many faithful who were ill by praying to the Mother of God and touching the garment. Desiring a more suitable location for the holy garment, Galibus and Candidus took the Precious Robe and brought it to Constantinople. By order of the emperor and the patriarch, the vesture was solemnly placed inside the church dedicated to the Mother of God at Blachernae.
Over the next several centuries, especially in times of danger, the Mother of God is said to have appeared in Blachernae holding her veil over the church and the entire city of Constantinople as if to protect it. Many Eastern Christians, with deep devotion to the Mother of God as intercessor, still celebrate the Feast of the Holy Protection on October 1st. Let us pray: “You have given us your sacred robe, a vestment of incorruption for all the faithful. It once covered your pure body, O Pure One, not it is a tent-cloth to protect all mankind!” (From the Kontakion of the feast)

GODHEAD HERE IN HIDING — GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS, S.J.
GODHEAD HERE IN HIDING, WHOM I DO ADORE, MASKED BY THESE BARE SHADOWS, SHAPE AND NOTHING MORE. SEE, LORD, AT THY SERVICE LOW LIES HERE A HEARTLOST, ALL LOST IN WONDER AT THE GOD THOU ART.
SEEING, TOUCHING, TASTING ARE IN THEE DECEIVED: HOW SAYS TRUSTY HEARING? THAT SHALL BE BELIEVED; WHAT GOD'S SON HAS TOLD ME, TAKE FOR TRUTH I DO;TRUTH HIMSELF SPEAKS TRULY OR THERE’S NOTHING TRUE.
ON THE CROSS THY GODHEAD MADE NO SIGN TO MEN, HERE THY VERY MANHOOD STEALS FROM HUMAN MEN: BOTH ARE MY CONFESSION, BOTH ARE MY BELIEF, AND I PRAY THE PRAYER OF THE DYING THIEF.
I AM NOT LIKE THOMAS, WOUNDS I CANNOT SEE, BUT CAN PLAINLY CALL THEE LORD AND GOD AS HE; LET ME TO A DEEPER FAITH DAILY NEARER MOVE, DAILY MAKE ME HARDER HOPE AND DEARER LOVE.
O THOU OUR REMINDER OF CHRIST CRUCIFIED, LIVING BREAD, THE LIFE OF US FOR WHOM HE DIED, LEND THIS LIFE TO ME THEN: FEED AND FEAST MY MIND, THERE BE THOU THE SWEETNESS MAN WAS MEANT TO FIND.
BRING THE TENDER TALE TRUE OF THE PELICAN, BATHE ME, JESU LORD, IN WHAT THY BOSOM RAN BLOOD WHEREOF A SINGLE DROP HAS POWER TO WIN ALL THE WORLD FORGIVENESS OF ITS WORLD OF SIN.
JESU, WHOM I LOOK AT SHROUDED HERE BELOW, I BESEECH THEE SEND ME WHAT I THIRST FOR, SO SOMEDAY TO GAZE ON THEE, FACE TO FACE IN LIGHT AND BE BLEST FOREVER WITH THY GLORY'S SIGHT. AMEN
