O ye incorporeal angels who stand before the throne of God, luminous with the brilliance thereof and everlastingly shining with radiance. As secondary luminaries, entreat Christ, that He grant unto our souls peace and great mercy. O immortal messengers of the truly incorruptible Life, ye most blessed ones who received life from the first Life, ye have become holy beholders of the eternal Wisdom, full of light, and reflecting lamps shown forth as is meet. O ye archangels and angels, principalities, thrones, dominions, six-winged seraphim, and divine, many-eyed cherubim, instruments of wisdom, virtues and powers most divine. Pray ye to Christ, that He grant our souls peace and great mercy. Archives:

SUNDAY OF THE MAN BORN BLIND THE HOLY BISHOP-MARTYR SYMEON, COUSIN OF THE LORD OUR VENERABLE FATHER STEPHEN, BISHOP OF VLADIMIR IN VOLHYNIA
Our Offerings
HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION on THURSDAY, MAY 1
“Jesus looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come! Give glory to your Son that Your Son may give
glory to You…Do you now, father, give me glory at Your side, a glory I had with You before the world
began.’” (John 13:1-7) On Thursday, we will celebrate the feast of the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.
This feast brings God’s glory out in full. This is what we celebrate in these final days of the Paschal Season.
The Icon of the Ascension (taken from The Icon Book)
Christ — the central figure at the top: As He ascends into heaven, He bestows a blessing upon the world and promises
to send the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. He is clothed in white to signify the brilliant Light of His Divinity.
The Theotokos — the holy figure below Christ
The Disciples — two groups on either side of the Theotokos: Although St. Matthias was not officially elected to
replace Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, until after the Ascension, he is always depicted as being present at the Ascension.
The Sunday of the Man Born Blind: Gospel Thought
In today’s Gospel, John 9:1-38, the man who was born blind lived in darkness because he could not see. But
Christ, the light of the world, miraculously gave him the gift of sight. Christ also wanted to confer “sight”
on all those who possessed physical sight but lacked the gift of true sight: faith. In this incident, the Pharisees lacked
sight, or faith, because of their pride. Christ alone can bestow the gift of faith. Today Gospel presents us with a lesson
on having the true gift of sight: faith in Christ.

FROM THE CHURCH FATHERS…
(ST. JOHN DAMASCENE, DOGMATIC WRITINGS ON THE THEOTOKOS, 2, 546)
“The prophecies concerning you have been fulfilled, O chaste Virgin! A prophet prefigures you as the gate of Eden
turned toward the East, through which no one passed except the Maker of you and of all the universe. Another saw you as a
bush engulfed in flames: the flames, in fact, of the deity who took up residence in you and did not consume you. Another
described you as the holy mountain from which broke loose, without human intervention, the cornerstone that struck the
statue of the spiritual Nebuchadnezzar. Truly great and paradoxical is the mystery fulfilled in you, O Mother of God!
Therefore, we glorify you for through you, in fact, salvation came to our souls.
“The Red Sea once prefigured the image of the Spouse who did not know the experience of cohabitation. Then Moses
divided the waters, now Gabriel is the mediator of the wonder. Then Israel traversed the abyss with dry feet, now the
Virgin gives birth to the Christ without seed. After the passage of Israel, the sea remained impassible; after the birth of
Emmanuel, the Immaculate One remained incorrupt. O You who are, who were, and have appeared as man, have mercy on us!
“O Virgin Most August, you are the temple and gate, palace and throne of the King. For you my Redeemer, Christ the
Lord, appeared to those who lay in darkness. He who is the Sun of Justice, wished in this way to illuminate those whom He
had created in His image with His own hand. Therefore, Most Holy Theotokos, worthy of all praise, who has acquired with Him
the boldness of a mother, pray to Him incessantly the He may save our souls.”
PLEASE NOTE: ASCENSION VIGIL ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, AT 7:30 p.m.
PASTORAL PONDERINGS
Holy Family will soon be celebrating its 25th anniversary. They have determined that 1983 was the year that the
parish began celebrating the Eucharist on a regular basis, although movement towards the establishment of a parish had
begun a number of months before, and the present church building would not be complete until 1985. To be more specific, the
first Mass on the church grounds was on July 9, 1983. Their 25th anniversary celebration will begin
with a dinner at The Barn at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18th. This catered dinner will be offered
without charge, although donations to defray the cost are expected. The members of Holy Resurrection Mission are invited to
join in the dinner celebration as well.
