O ye incorporeal angels who stand before the throne of God, luminous with the brilliance thereof and everlastingly shining with radiance. As secondary luminaries, entreat Christ, that He grant unto our souls peace and great mercy. O immortal messengers of the truly incorruptible Life, ye most blessed ones who received life from the first Life, ye have become holy beholders of the eternal Wisdom, full of light, and reflecting lamps shown forth as is meet. O ye archangels and angels, principalities, thrones, dominions, six-winged seraphim, and divine, many-eyed cherubim, instruments of wisdom, virtues and powers most divine. Pray ye to Christ, that He grant our souls peace and great mercy. Archives:

MEATFARE SUNDAY TRANSLATION OF THE RELICS OF OUR HOLY FATHER JOHN CHRYSOSTOM
Our Offerings
SOLEMN HOLY DAY: SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2
NEXT SUNDAY AFTER DIVINE LITURGY, ON FEBRUARY 3, WE WILL HAVE FORGIVENESS VESPERS. THE LAST SUNDAY BEFORE THE GREAT
FAST IS KNOWN AS CHEESEFARE SUNDAY OR FORGIVENESS SUNDAY.
On this day, Vespers follows Divine Liturgy, and all in the mission are asked to attend, and to offer and receive
forgivness from the priest, the deacon, and from each other, so that together, we may make a holy beginning for the Great
Fast.
Meatfare Sunday
WHat do we mean by “Meatfare”? The week following the Sunday of the Prodigal Son is called Meatfare
Week. It ends on the Sunday called “Meatfare Sunday”. Traditionally, Meatfare Sunday is the last day on which
it is permissible to eat meat before the Great Fast. Meatfare means “farewell to meat”. Thus, the name
“Meatfare Sunday”. Of course, we are speaking of the time when the Great Fast was observed in all strictness.
The service of Meatfare Sunday: The Sunday of Meatfare is also called the Sunday of the Terrible Judgment. In
today’s Gospel Christ speaks of terrible judgment, the reward of the righteous, and the eternal punishment of the
wicked. The entire service is devoted to the Last Judgment. By recalling the manner in which the judgment will be carried
out, this service is designed to fill us with salutary fear and sorrow for our sins while stressing the importance of good
works, especially works of mercy.
THE FIRST WEEK OF THE GREAT FAST
The Great Fast begins with Vespers of Forgiveness Sunday. Apart from Holy Week, itself, the first week of the Great Fast is
perhaps the most intense week throughout Lent. There will be a service each night, Monday through Thursday at
7:30 PM. We will pray the Great Compline and the Canon of St. Andrew of Crete, an extended meditation on our
condition before God and the call to repentance. On the Fridays throughout the Great Fast, the Akathist will be prayed to
the Holy Theotokos with the Small Compline.
