O ye incorporeal angels who stand before the throne of God, luminous with the brilliance thereof and everlastingly shining with radiance. As secondary luminaries, entreat Christ, that He grant unto our souls peace and great mercy. O immortal messengers of the truly incorruptible Life, ye most blessed ones who received life from the first Life, ye have become holy beholders of the eternal Wisdom, full of light, and reflecting lamps shown forth as is meet. O ye archangels and angels, principalities, thrones, dominions, six-winged seraphim, and divine, many-eyed cherubim, instruments of wisdom, virtues and powers most divine. Pray ye to Christ, that He grant our souls peace and great mercy. Archives:

*SOLEMN HOLY DAY* on Wednesday, November 21
Kontakion of the Entrance
The most pure temple of the Savior, the richest palace and the treasury of the glory of God, today enters into the House of
the Lord, bringing grace which is in the Spirit of God. The angels of God sing to her: this is the heavenly tabernacle!
Entrance in the Temple
“O faithful, let us leap for joy today, singing psalms and hymns of praise in honor of Mary, His mother, the Holy
Tabernacle and Ark, that contained the Word whom nothing can contain! She is offered to God as a child in a marvelous way,
and Zechariah, the high priest, receives her with great joy, for she is the dwelling place of the Most High.”
(Vespers of the Entrance, Tone 1)
The Presentation, or the Entry of the Mother of God into the Temple, on November 21, does not belong to the most
ancient festivals of the church. The feast was first celebrated by St. Andrew of Crete in Jerusalem during the
7th century and had been introduced into Constantinople a century later under the Patriarch St. Tarsius. It
was then adopted in the west, under Pope Gregory XI, who had celebrated the feast for the first time at Avignon in
1374.
The mystery of this Marian festival leads us into the very treasure-house of tradition. The church breaks the silence of
the scriptures and shows us the incomprehensible way of Providence, which prepares the receptacle of the Word: “The
Mother predetermined before the ages, preached by the prophets,” now introduced into the Holy of Holies, like a
“hidden treasure of the Glory of God.”
The theme of the temple is developed in the liturgy and iconography of the Presentation. He who welcomes the Holy Virgin,
the priest Zacharias — the future father of the Forerunner St. John the Baptist — reunites in his person
the two traditions, priestly and prophetic.
The church honors the Virgin Mary as the God-Bearer (Theotokos), the one who in God’s plan of salvation would give
birth to God the Word!
SPIRIT OF THE SERVICES OF THE FEAST:
The services of this feast celebrate the event of the Presentation in the Temple with joyful melodies; it praises the
dignity of the Mother of God and extols the great sacrifice of her parents. The songs and hymns of this day are rich in
poetic expression. Profoundly dogmatic, the day’s poetry sings the praises of the Divine Maternity, Virginity,
Holiness and Intercession of the Most Pure Virgin Mary in beautiful analogies and symbols. Mary is most frequently extolled
as the Temple of God — an allusion to the temple to which she was brought by her parents. Here are some expressions
from the stichera and the canon of the feast: “You are the temple of God,” the “Divine Temple,” the
“Sanctified Temple,” the “Temple and Altar of the King of all,” the “Living Temple of the
Holy Glory of Christ our God,” the “Most Holy Temple of Our Holy God,” the “God-Containing
Temple,” the “Temple and Palace,” the “Temple and Palace and living Heaven.”
A PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
O Lord Jesus Christ, my Savior and Master, I, your unworthy servant, give my sincerest and heartfelt thanks to You for Your
loving goodness, continual benefits, and abundant mercy that You have bestowed upon me. I fall down in love and adoration
before You, my Lord, and offer to You my praises, gratitude, and deepest appreciation.
With fervor, I cry out to You, O God, deliver me from all adversities and evil, so that I may spend eternity with You. For
You, Jesus, are the hope of all people. To You, with the Father, and the Holy Spirit, be ascribed glory and honor, now and
ever and forever. Amen.
