O ye incorporeal angels who stand before the throne of God, luminous with the brilliance thereof and everlastingly shining with radiance. As secondary luminaries, entreat Christ, that He grant unto our souls peace and great mercy. O immortal messengers of the truly incorruptible Life, ye most blessed ones who received life from the first Life, ye have become holy beholders of the eternal Wisdom, full of light, and reflecting lamps shown forth as is meet. O ye archangels and angels, principalities, thrones, dominions, six-winged seraphim, and divine, many-eyed cherubim, instruments of wisdom, virtues and powers most divine. Pray ye to Christ, that He grant our souls peace and great mercy. Archives:

TODAY’S GOSPEL THOUGHT:
DEMONS HAVE NO POWER OVER PIGS OR US
Demons are extremely wicked, cruel, mischievous, hurtful, and treacherous to those who are in their power. Today’s
Gospel clearly proves this because they hurried the swine over a precipice and drowned them in the waters. Christ granted
the demons’ request so that we might learn from what happened and realize that their disposition is ruthless,
bestial, incapable of being softened, and solely intent on doing evil to those whom they can get into their power.
If there is anyone among us who is wanton, swinish, filth loving, impure, and contaminated with the abominations of sin,
God permits such a one to fall into their power and sink into the abyss of damnation. It will never happen that those who
love Christ will become subject to them.
It will never happen to us as long as we walk in His footsteps; avoid negligence in the performance of what is right;
desire those things which are honorable; and belong to that virtuous and praiseworthy lifestyle that Christ has marked out
for us by the precepts of the Gospel.

SHUISKAYA-SMOLENSK
Commemorated on November 2 and Bright Tuesday
In 1654-1655, the people of the city of Shuiu in Russia suffered a terrible plague. They exhausted all human means to be
saved, so then turned to the mercy of the Lord. The entire city resorted to prayer. The churches were filled, liturgies
were served every day, and processions were made around the churches and even around the whole city.
One of the churches was named for the Holy Resurrection. The people of this church asked a pious ascetic to paint an icon
of the Mother of God to be displayed in their church. As the icon was being painted, the parishioners of the church spent
the next week fasting and praying. All of them went to confession and all received Holy Communion. Then with their priest,
they went to the iconographer for the icon.
Upon receiving the holy icon of the precious and loving, Mother of God, the people immediately went to the church and
enshrined it. From then on, the plague began to ease. It was the parishioners who first received relief and then the entire
city of Shuiu.
The icon began to be a source of many other healings. There is written, “An Account of the Wonder-Working Smolensk
Icon.” In this account, there is recorded 37 cures of affliction of the eyes, 15 from possession,
13 from foot diseases, 7 from ear infections, 7 from internal diseases, 7 from palsy, 5 from head
afflictions, and 24 from other ailments.
The icon is commemorated on several days: Bright Tuesday, when the first miracle attributed to the icon took place;
November 2, when the plague eased; June 28, when the city was spared from an outbreak of cholera; and on the
first Sunday of the Apostles Fast.
November 1 is the:
WORDS OF WISDOM
“Suffering with Joy” by John Chrysostom
When we suffer anything for Christ’s sake, we should do so not only with courage, but even with joy. If we have to go
hungry, let us be glad as if we were at a banquet. If we are insulted, let us be elated as though we had been showered with
praises. If we lose all we possess, let us consider ourselves the gainers. If we provide for the poor, let us regard
ourselves as the recipients. Anyone who does not give in this way will find it difficult to give at all. So when you wish
to distribute alms, do not think only of what you are giving away; think rather of what you are gaining, for your gain will
exceed your loss.
And not only in the matter of almsgiving, but also with every virtue you practice: do not think of the painful effort
involved, but of the sweetness of the reward; and above all remember that your struggles are for the sake of our Lord
Jesus. Then you will easily rise above them, and live out your whole lifetime in happiness; for nothing brings more
happiness than a good conscience.
