Icon of the Archangel Gabriel

O ye incorporeal angels who stand before the throne of God, luminous with the brilliance thereof and everlastingly shining with radiance. As secondary luminaries, entreat Christ, that He grant unto our souls peace and great mercy.

O immortal messengers of the truly incorruptible Life, ye most blessed ones who received life from the first Life, ye have become holy beholders of the eternal Wisdom, full of light, and reflecting lamps shown forth as is meet.

O ye archangels and angels, principalities, thrones, dominions, six-winged seraphim, and divine, many-eyed cherubim, instruments of wisdom, virtues and powers most divine. Pray ye to Christ, that He grant our souls peace and great mercy.

Veneration of the Holy Cross
We bow to your cross, O Lord, and we praise Your Holy Resurrection.
We celebrate the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Sept. 14. Veneration of the Holy Cross became public with the discovery of the Cross sometime around 326. It was discovered during excavation operations under Archbishop Macarius of Jerusalem (314-335). Tradition credits St. Helena with the discovery.
St. Helena sent a large portion of the Holy Wood to her son, Emperor Constantine the Great, residing in Constantinople. Another portion was sent to Rome, where it was placed in the Basilica of the Holy Cross.
The first public veneration of the Holy Cross took place in Jerusalem on Sept. 14, 335. A pious pilgrim named Eteria visited the Holy Places in 380 and wrote in her Diary of a Pilgrimage, “The dedication of the churches — Martyrion on Calvary and Anastasis over the Holy Sepulcher — is observed with great solemnity since the Cross of the Lord was found on that day.”
The annual observance of the Dedication of the Basilicas, together with the exposition and veneration of the Holy Cross, attracted a great multitude of pilgrims. To enable the many pilgrims to view and venerate the Holy Cross, the bishop elevated the Relics of the Cross. This action was the beginning of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
The feast was introduced to Constantinople from Jerusalem, then to Rome by St. Gregory the Great. By the end of the sixth century the feast had become universal, celebrated in both East and West.

Selected Hymns from the Feast of the Exaltation
“The exalted Cross calls all of creation to praise the pure passion, the passion of Christ, who was exalted on it. On the Cross He killed the one who had killed us. Christ has brought us back to life. He has adorned us, making us worthy to live in the heavens. We rejoice and exalt His name and magnify His condescension.”
“Rejoice, O Life-Bearing Cross, the Invincible Weapon of Godliness, the Gate of Paradise, the Protection of the Faithful! The Cross is the might of the Church! The Cross raises us from earth to heaven! The Cross is the enemy of Satan! The Cross is the haven of salvation!”
— From Vespers
“O Mother of God, you became a Mystical Paradise when without tilling you brought forth Christ our God by whom the Life-Giving Tree of the Cross was planted on earth. Therefore, seeing Him on the Cross, we adore Him and we magnify you.”
— From the Canon at Matins, Ode 9

Pastoral Ponderings: It’s Real Love
If we say something stupid or do something inappropriate in the presence of people we love, we hope they will forgive us. When we are with those we love, we relax. We speak more easily the thoughts of our hearts, and we do more readily the impulsive deeds that bring relationships to life. Sometimes we act with the spontaneity that love enjoys but with the inappropriateness that love does not tolerate. We say something insulting; we do something crude.
The best relationships tolerate mistakes. Our misdeeds are a part of us; to love someone is to love the person who commits errors of judgment. For instance, as recorded in the Book of Exodus, the Israelites had grown weary of waiting for Moses as he waited for God on Mount Sinai, so they worshiped the golden calf. Moses reminded God of the covenant promised to all the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. God relented and did not destroy the people for their sin.
No matter how stupid our mistakes, God will forgive us.
